In the DEEP CITY ZURICH studio, we critically examined the role of artificial intelligence and deep learning in architecture, questioning if creativity in architecture is exclusive to humans and if machines can learn and generate meaningful architecture. We explored whether machines can transcend quantifiable data to achieve architectural quality and capture the elusive “genius loci”.
Building on our previous semester's studio, Refuge 2.0 – Artificial Swissness, which focused on the capabilities and limitations of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) in creating a primitive hut in the Swiss Alps, this semester we delved into urban typologies in Zürich. Our focus was on the concept of the “post-2020 home”, examining not just the architecture of home as a shelter but also its role in conveying "Heimat" and identity. We used AI to process images, aiming to understand and learn the architectural DNA of Zürich Altstadt's local identity and the visual elements that define its genius loci. We sought to define what "Zürichness" means, both to us and to the machine.
