In this experiment an artificial intelligence serves as a new mode of vision, bypassing the preconceptions of the human designer in order to reveal an unbiased pool of ideas for the architect to interpret. The algorithm will focus the attention on details otherwise unnoticed and generate new interpretations. Students are asked to computer generate images resembling the built reality of the Gangnam distric in Seoul using a GAN algorithm (generative adversarial network). As input dataset students will first obtain a large number of street view images of a section of the district, and further curate and cluster the images with a variety of techniques. The pretrained GAN will eventually learn from these images to generate new interpretation of Seoul’s common architecture. Students will select and curate the outcome to arrive at a set of urban components as the basis for their semester project. The curation of the input data set and the critical analysis of the generated images are vital to the success of the assignment.
